And we're off (travel days)

It's 4:15am and I've been lying here awake since 1:30, so I figured I would give up on sleep and jot down a few notes. Here is a first pass at notes from the trip covering the travel from San Francisco through Dubai to Lusaka. I am henpecking on an ipad with no keyboard, so bear with typos...

Leaving Tahoe:
As we pulled away from Truckee, Dez commented, "I'm feeling happy and sad and a little bit nervous." I smiled and said he would feel that way his whole life every time he left on an adventure.

Highlights from airplane flights:

- Watching Bollywood films, which I haven't done since being in India eight years ago, and the cameras mounted beneath the plane live-streaming images of the ground into the cabin screens.
- Dez spilling water on his lap and soaking his seat cushion 1 hour into the flight from Dubai to Lusaka. (He was surprisingly mellow about the whole thing and just sat on a folded blanket in damp pants the whole flight.)
- Dez smiling proudly at me like the cat who ate the canary with 3 pieces of gum in his mouth.
- Dez pouting in the Dubai airport because I wouldn't buy him $500 headphones or a golf club.
- Dez slumped over his suitcase after a 15.5 hour flight at the curb waiting for the airport shuttle in Dubai with sweat beads exploding on his face moaning, "It's so hot!"
- Deciding that the 14 hour layover in Dubai was more tiring than refreshing after standing in a 45 min line to check into the hotel.
- Laying awake from 2:30 to 6:30 am from a failure to trust travel alarms and a fear of sleeping too heavily and missing our next flight if I actually went to sleep.
- Random people asking one another to take pictures of them in the Dubai airport, including a very round Arab man in a brown kurta who laid himself out on a bench next to us in a model's pose with his arm propping his head and his legs stretched out and then gestured at me to ask if I would take a picture of him in his sexy man pose. Fortunately he was asking for a picture OF him and not WITH him.

Dubai impressions:

Me: What's the same between Dubai and Truckee?
Dez: Lots - the cars, roads, pavement, stores, bus stops, signs, gas stations, hotels.
Me: And what's different?
Dez: It's really hot.
Me: Anything else?
Dez: No.
Me: What about people's clothes?
Dez: They're the same.
Me: Tomorrow if you look at the women you may see some with fabric over their heads.
Dez: Well, some of the women looked like they were dressed like ninjas.
